A couple of weeks ago, my roommate and I decided to do something for ourselves... pay $40 for 40 days of unlimited yoga at a wonderful little yoga studio super close to our apartment. I wasn't keen on the idea of paying money for a workout when I have a fully-loaded state-of-the-art gym and recreation center right on campus, but I decided, what the heck? Take a few yoga classes. Try it out. It's convenient, there's no commitment, and it can't hurt! Now, it's two weeks later, and all I've got to say is that yoga is GREAT. Not only is it a great workout (a 90 degree studio makes for lots of sweat and lots of cleansing), but it's an amazing form of psychological therapy! That sounds weird, but yoga has taught me how to focus, how to become more aware of myself and my body, and to ignore the "stories" that I tell myself, about how I can't do something or that I'm not good enough. Pushing past the edge of a pose translates directly to pushing against the boundaries I've set for myself. "If you don't challenge yourself, you don't change yourself." I have started to purge my life of the people that waste my time and I've learned how to chill out when I get stressed or bogged down with schoolwork. This is a kind of personal growth that a treadmill or a bike could never give me, and it's so worth it! In about two weeks, my 40 days will be up, and even if I never take another yoga class again, I will have learned many invaluable lessons about myself and my abilities. I just have to breathe, focus, and push past the edge. I encourage all of you to do the same!
Sincerely,
T
